“Do what you say you are going to do. Follow through means never having to say you’re sorry”- Mark Goulston
You are going to forget something. You are going to promise to call, or to schedule a meeting or to update something or someone. If you’re lucky, and your career goes long enough, you will do it more than once.
For some educators, this is unfathomable.
I do what I say I will do. I follow up. I’m at inbox zero! I don’t have anything that I could forget.
And then you’ll be blessed with children or a spouse. You’ll have a sick family member or lose someone close to you. Everyone will understand, but you’ll still forget something.
This is the time, today is the day, and it’s time to build equity. Not making sure that everyone is treated fair and impartially, but more like the stored value of something.
Ensure that people in your circles know you deliver, that you take care of things, so that when you don’t, there is something there that parents, colleagues, or bosses will remember.
Keep a notebook or set a reminder, start whatever system you need. Show up and follow up because you will be happy you did when you forget.
You will have equity with families. You will have equity with administrators. It seems far-fetched, but that equity will pay off.
