The Educator’s Paradox: Too Much Time? Or Not Enough?

Education is unique in that the years have distinct borders to them. You start in late summer/early fall and end in late spring/early summer of the next year. 10 months, give or take. 40 weeks, pretty much.

Can you think of another job that has such clear time parameters? Friends of mine who work in medical fields, office jobs, or construction don’t have such clear endings and beginnings.

Because our year is so clear in time borders, do we see the long-term changes in the profession?

Do we see the future coming along?

Or, are we focusing on our time right now, and what that means for us and our classroom?

Let’s face it: any valuable educator is trying to get better at their craft.

Some of us are generalists, like in the elementary grades, and might have to pick getting better at math instruction while keeping the same skill set for English language arts temporarily. Some of us…
