The school year offers a lot of new starts- coming back from vacation or breaks, coming back from the weekend, even those occasional mid-week days off… we come back, hopefully refreshed, and ready to be present for our students.
New starts come on the back of time off, and while we all relish time off when we are mired in the day to day, it can also lend itself to forgetting what makes us good at what we do: our routine and our discipline to that routine.
Weekends are the time for friends and family. Vacations get us away from the day to day drudgery. During these times, we balance what Ryan Holiday calls “the can versus the should.” We can take a nap, we can have some wine. We can skip a workout or have another piece of cake. These things are all good on their own, but can derail some of what we are working toward when combined too often.
See your breaks for what they are- time off from the day to day, but not time to throw away a solid routine. Plan your time, keep your focus on improving parts of your life that you want to be better. Don’t sacrifice the can for the should.
