I had to call to make an appointment- as an educator, this is what you do on vacations and breaks. Of course, there are days you take off during the school year, but when you do it right, you are there for your students. So, vacations and breaks become the times to catch up.
“…oh you have the summer off. Hmm.”
I swallowed any kind of “sorry” retort, and laughed off the comment. You get used to this. You only work half the year. You get the summers off, must be nice.
“I was a stay at home Mom, and by the time I could get back to work, it was too late.”
I picked up on the inference. You wanted to work in schools- and probably wanted to be a teacher. I will not begrudge any parent from wanting to stay home with their children, and with all honesty, I know the feeling that was being described. Missing out. Not capitalizing on a perceived chance.
We finished up our business, and I thought about this conversation enough to write something down.
